Session 8: Cultural Landscape

Instructional Activities

  1. Review the content of the previous session.

  2. Ask students to identify well-known landmarks in the United States. Ask what they think makes these landmarks special.

  3. Display pictures or slides of the following features representing the cultural landscape of Southeast and East Asia:
    • Angkor Wat
    • Great Wall of China
    • Pagodas
    • Temples and shrines
    • Terraced rice fields

    As each picture or slide is displayed, ask students if they can identify the item and it’s location. Also ask students to explain why this feature is important to the culture of its region. Provide information on each item as it is presented, and discuss with the class.

  4. Assign a teacher-selected reading, worksheet, or other reinforcement activity, using available teacher resources.
