- World map
- Copy of a map of ancient China (1 per student)
- Crayons and colored pencils
- Have the class locate the continent of Asia on a world map, then locate the country of China. Talk about the fact that China is an ancient civilization, and explain what it means to be an ancient civilization.
- Show the class the map of ancient China. Locate rivers, landmarks, and points of interest, and list these on a chart.
- Have students label the rivers, landmarks, and points of interest on their copies of the map of ancient China. Have them color their maps.
- Use a variety of resources to familiarize students with ancient China. The following Web site may be helpful:

- Introduce the “Contributions of Ancient China” chart for students to complete as each contribution is discussed and studied.
